A short review of Hybrids 1.0-3.5 appeared in the June edition of Artscene ". . . .That insects and machines possess certain overlapping visual and structural similarities is not an original idea, but Paul Paiement’s approach is striking. The multiple series of “Hybrids” are executed with such meticulous commitment that they bear the stamp of a scientific study even as they incorporate metallic candy colors and the buttons and panels of the latest consumer electronics. Titles such as “Belinota Laserpointa” good naturedly evoke Latin scientific names, and the agglomeration of series works are arranged into compositional types as though sorted by genus. If it is all rather too easy to swallow, the eccentric pleasures of this bestiary are substantial (at Laguna Museum, Orange County). . . "

Another, more brief review of Hybrids 1.0-3.5 appeared in the Calendar section of the Sunday, May 15th edition of the Los Angeles Times. Holly Myers wrote " the hybrids that populate Paul Paiement's paintings are appealingly fantastical creatures--part insect, part consumer gaget--but the strength of the show lies in the artist's meticulous attention to the actual physiology of the insects, combined with his elegant technique and rigorous compositional experimentation."

A one page review of Hybrids 1.0-3.5 appeared in the Saturday, May 7th edition of the Los Angeles Times. In the review, Holly Myers wrote "it is an impressively balanced body of work. The formulaic potential of the premise is offset by the rigorous variation; the cool, controlled, almost clinical precision tempered by the cheery color and the playful nature of the pairings. There is a touch of social commentary, a gentle dose of art historical allusion and a good quantity of intelligent optical play. The painting, moreover, is lovely. The tempera works have a smooth, creamy palatability that strikes a near-perfect balance between the work's organic and inorganic aspects, linking the powdery delicacy of a butterfly wing with the plastic sensuality of a computer mouse." Here is a great excerpt from a weblog about my show last summer at Heather Marx Gallery:
Paul Paiement @ Heather Marx: While Wal-Martists start with a consumer object and make things from it that, ideally, result in beauty-added objects, Paiement works from the other direction. The cute little paintings @ Heather Marx were paintings of consumer objects… each built out of watercolors of bugs. Too little art has a cloying sense of humor. Paiement’s work does.

Website Opens!
After a lengthy and arduous process, PaulPaiement.com and .net are open to the public, both of which direct to the same website.
This website was opened to share the artwork of Paul Paiement with the general public, as well as to create an online portfolio.
Currently the site runs a bit heavily on Internet Explorer for Mac OS-based computers, but those problems are being investigated and fixed.
